What are step length, stride length and cadence?Updated a month ago

Overview

  • This article explains three key movement metrics used to calculate your distance and pace: Step Length, Stride Length, and Cadence.

Detailed Explanation

  • Step Length: The distance between the point where one foot makes initial contact with the ground and the point where the opposite foot makes initial contact, when walking or running. An average person's walking step length is about 75cm (30 inches).
  • Stride Length: The distance covered by the same foot between two consecutive steps when walking or running. A stride is made up of two steps, one with each foot. The average running stride length is about 132cm (52 inches) for women and 158cm (62 inches) for men.
  • Cadence: The number of steps or strides taken per minute while walking or running, measured in steps per minute (SPM) or strides per minute.

Measuring Your Own Step and Stride Length

  • Mark a starting point, then walk forward a set number of steps or strides.
  • Mark where your last step or stride ends.
  • Measure the distance between your two marks, then divide it by the number of steps or strides taken to get your personal step length or stride length.

Precautions

  • This product is not a medical device and cannot replace professional medical advice.
  • Setting your own step and stride length in the app (rather than relying on default estimates) can improve the accuracy of your distance and pace data.
